The Doubleday Baseball League is proud to announce the Players of the Week for the period ending May 26, 1996.

United League – Mark McGwire (Detroit Tigers)
At 32 years old, veteran slugger Mark McGwire showed he can still deliver elite production. The Detroit first baseman tore through opposing pitchers with a .500 batting average over the past week. McGwire racked up 6 hits in 12 at-bats, including 4 home runs and 7 RBIs across 6 games, earning him the United League Player of the Week Award.

On the season, McGwire is batting .233 with 40 hits, 15 home runs, and 31 RBIs in 50 games.

Federal League – Jason Giambi (Chicago White Sox)
Jason Giambi announced his arrival in a big way this past week. The 25-year-old Chicago White Sox first baseman hit an impressive .560, going 14-for-25 with 4 home runs, 13 RBIs, and 9 runs scored. His breakout performance secured him the Federal League Player of the Week honor.

For the season, Giambi is batting .335 with 20 home runs, 48 RBIs, and 42 runs scored. He has tallied 64 hits in 191 at-bats through 50 games.
