The Doubleday Baseball League is proud to recognize its top performers for the month of June 1996, honoring excellence from both leagues in pitching, hitting, and rookie achievements.
United League Rookie of the Month – Vaughn Eshelman (Detroit Tigers)
Detroit left-hander Vaughn Eshelman established himself as one of the league’s most impressive young arms, earning Rookie of the Month honors. In 6 starts, the 25-year-old went 4–1 with a 1.87 ERA across 43.1 innings, striking out 26 batters while holding opponents to a .200 average. For the season, Eshelman has started 16 games, recording a 7–8 mark with a 3.05 ERA and 61 strikeouts over 118 innings.
Federal League Rookie of the Month – Scott Rolen (Cincinnati Reds)
Cincinnati third baseman Scott Rolen continued to showcase his star potential, capturing Federal League Rookie of the Month. The 21-year-old hit .346 in June with 36 hits, 7 home runs, 22 RBIs, and 14 runs scored. Overall, Rolen is batting .302 on the year with 17 home runs, quickly putting himself in the Rookie of the Year conversation.
United League Pitcher of the Month – Randy Johnson (Seattle Mariners)
Seattle ace Randy Johnson was nearly unhittable in June, earning Pitcher of the Month honors. The 32-year-old dominated with a 5–0 record, a 1.07 ERA, and an astonishing 79 strikeouts in 50.1 innings over 6 starts. For the year, Johnson has compiled a 10–2 record with a 2.47 ERA in 17 starts.
Federal League Pitcher of the Month – Mike Mussina (Cincinnati Reds)
Cincinnati’s Mike Mussina added another accolade to his résumé, being named Federal League Pitcher of the Month. The 27-year-old right-hander went 5–1 in June, striking out 50 across 46.2 innings while limiting hitters to a .136 average and posting a 1.54 ERA. Mussina now owns a 9–4 record with a 3.01 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 119.2 innings this season.
United League Batter of the Month – Glenn Davis (Colorado Rockies)
Veteran first baseman Glenn Davis continued to prove his value as a middle-of-the-order force, capturing United League Batter of the Month. Davis hit .347 with 16 home runs, 33 RBIs, and 25 runs scored in June. On the season, he is batting .282 with 25 home runs, 56 RBIs, and 46 runs scored.
Federal League Batter of the Month – Eric Davis (Cincinnati Reds)
Cincinnati outfielder Eric Davis earned Federal League Batter of the Month honors after a strong June performance. The 34-year-old batted .313 with 31 hits, 12 home runs, 23 RBIs, and 23 runs scored. For the year, Davis is hitting .244 with 24 home runs and 75 hits in 308 at-bats.
These performances exemplify the incredible balance of veteran leadership and rising stars that define the 1996 DBL season.
