Player of the Week – July 28th, 1996

The Doubleday Baseball League is proud to announce the Players of the Week for the period ending July 28, 1996.

United League – Sammy Sosa (New York Mets)
New York’s Sammy Sosa delivered a scorching week at the plate, earning the United League Player of the Week award. The 27-year-old right fielder posted a .522 average (12-for-23) with 5 home runs, 10 RBIs, and 6 runs scored over six games. Sosa’s explosive bat helped fuel New York’s offense throughout the week, continuing his reputation as one of the league’s premier power hitters. On the season, Sosa is batting .255 with 33 home runs and 85 RBIs.

Federal League – Jim Thome (Kansas City Royals)
Kansas City’s Jim Thome continued his breakout season by capturing the Federal League Player of the Week honors. The 25-year-old first baseman turned in a dominant performance, hitting .455 (10-for-22) with 5 home runs, 9 RBIs, and 7 runs scored. Thome’s consistency and power have been key to Kansas City’s success this year. He currently boasts a .280 average with 37 home runs, 90 RBIs, 104 hits, and a .412 on-base percentage.

Both Sosa and Thome put on exceptional displays of offensive firepower, further solidifying their status as two of the DBL’s brightest stars.
