Franchise earns second straight division crown and first playoff berth under Arizona name
The Office of the Commissioner of the Doubleday Baseball League today announced that the Arizona Diamondbacks have officially clinched a postseason berth and secured the United League West Division Championship for the 1996 season.
This marks the franchise’s second consecutive division title and the eighth playoff appearance overall since joining the league in 1976. It also represents a milestone year for the organization, as it is their first playoff berth since relocating from San Francisco to Arizona prior to the start of the season.
Previously known as the San Francisco Giants, the club underwent relocation and rebranding ahead of the 1996 campaign, debuting as the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite the transition, the team maintained its competitive edge and captured the division title in its inaugural season under the new banner.
The Diamondbacks will now advance to the postseason as representatives of the United League West Division.
