Braves Win in 13
|
Crowds lined up early in front of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, eagerly awaiting the start of the 1994 Doubleday Baseball League season. On the mound was John Smoltz for the visiting Orlando Sun Rays and Ron Robinson for the hometown Atlanta Braves. In a spirited contest, the Braves pulled out the win, defeating the Sun Rays by the score of 7-6. Earning player of the game honors was Howard Johnson.
Johnson had a game-changing single in the bottom of the 13th. On a 3-1 curveball from Todd Jones, he banged a run-scoring single to right, giving the Braves a 7-6 lead. It was the 3rd hit of the year for Johnson.
"There's no quit in this team," said Braves manager Will Henderson.
