Spiders Win at Orlando, 3-1
|
Fans brought energy and enthusiasm to the Orlando Devil Rays home opener. John Smoltz started for the home team against John Thomson for the Cleveland Spiders. The Devil Rays were unable to reward the home crowd with a win. The final score was 3-1, Cleveland. John Smoltz was named player of the game. John Thomson got credit for the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed 1 run on 6 hits in 8 innings. Steve Karsay finished to wrap up his 1st save.
Cleveland relied on the bat of Kevin Mitchell to get the win. The third baseman ripped a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Spiders ahead, 2-0. For the game, Mitchell had 2 doubles and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.
"We put some tough at-bats on some tough pitches," said Cleveland manager Wilson Ogle.
