Devil Rays Win in Extras
|
The Orlando Devil Rays faced a tough opponent in Cincinnati pitcher Mike Mussina, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Riverfront Stadium by a final score of 7-5. Mussina went 7 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. Orlando reliever Alan Benes picked up the win, upping his record to 4-4. Felix Heredia absorbed the loss. Frank DiPino, credited with the save, is now 3 for 3 in save opportunities.
The Reds had been locked in a 5-5 tie with the Devil Rays going into the top of the 11th inning. That changed quickly when the two-time All-Star Tim Salmon came to the plate. Salmon hit a 2-run home run on a 1-1 slider from Cincinnati hurler Felix Heredia. It was Salmon's 20th home run of the year.
In postgame comments, Salmon said, "I think we gave the fans their money's worth."
The Devil Rays saw their win-loss record go to 45-40. At the same time, the Reds fell to 47-39.
