Orioles Finish Off Marlins in 12
|
The Florida Marlins got a superb performance from right fielder Ellis Burks, but the Baltimore Orioles still won the game, 8-5. Burks was named the player of the game despite the loss. He belted 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Baltimore reliever Chuck Cary picked up the win to move to 2-0. Heathcliff Slocumb suffered the loss. Baltimore occupies third place in the United League East Division at 44-40.
Baltimore used the timely hitting of Bill Spiers to capture the win. The second baseman stroked a 2-run double in the top of the 12th inning to put the Orioles on top, 7-5. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats, but he made it count.
"You've got to ride the highs and the lows in baseball in order to succeed," Spiers told the Baltimore Daily. "Right now I'm feeling good, but that don't mean squat for tomorrow."
