Yankees Lose, 5-4, at Three Rivers Stadium
|
Pittsburgh starter David Nied pitched effectively against the New York Yankees at Three Rivers Stadium. The right-hander led his team to a 5-4 win. The winning pitcher was Nied, now 4-6. He tossed 7.2 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 10. Pittsburgh is in second place in the Federal League East Division with a record of 47-38.
The Pirates got an important contribution from third baseman Robin Ventura, who in the bottom of the first stroked a 0-1 fastball into left-center for a 2-run double. It was his 14th double of the season and put the Pirates ahead, 2-0.
"We squandered some opportunities," said New York manager Patrick McQuail.
