Piazza 3-3 to Power Cubs Offense
|
The Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 15-5, at Busch Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of first baseman Mike Piazza, who captured player of the game honors. He went 3-3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. Chicago starter Scott Chiamparino was credited with the win after throwing 92 pitches over 6.1 innings. His record now stands at 5-8. The 'W' lifts Chicago's record to 43-42.
It could have been a different outcome for Chicago, had it not been for Phil Plantier, the 28-year old right fielder . Plantier contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the third inning to put Chicago up, 1-0.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Plantier told the Chicago Daily.
