The New York Mets turned back the Baltimore Orioles, 5-4, at Shea Stadium. B.J. Surhoff was named player of the game for his fine performance. He went 2 for 2 with 2 singles and 2 walks. He scored 2 runs. New York reliever Willie Blair was the winner. His record is now 4-1. The losing pitcher was Darryl Scott. The Mets are now 49-36, while the Orioles fall to 32-54.
The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Surhoff hit a cutter from Darryl Scott for a run-scoring single. The Mets, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win.
