Close Win Moves Mets to 49-38
|
The New York Mets beat the Washington Senators, 5-4, at RFK Stadium. The Mets got a fine performance from shortstop Gary Sheffield, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2 for 5 with 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Tom Glavine went 7 innings for New York to pick up the win. The left-hander was charged with 4 earned runs. He scattered 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 7. His record improves to 9-5. Willie Blair, credited with the save, is now 2 for 3 in save opportunities.
A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out in the top of the seventh inning. That's when third baseman Dave Magadan, who finished 3rd in the UL in doubles with 40 in 1990, drew a walk. The Mets went on to win.
"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Washington manager Alexander Cumana.
New York is now riding a 3-game win streak.
