The Montreal Expos got a superb performance from pitcher Pedro Martinez. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Baltimore. The Orioles won the game, 3-2. In spite of the loss, Martinez was named the player of the game. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball. The winner was Baltimore reliever Roger McDowell, now 1-4. The loser was Dave Leiper. The 5th-place Orioles raised their record to 33-54.

When he came to bat in the bottom of the tenth, Kenny Lofton had a chance to end it. Montreal pitcher Ricky Bottalico had other ideas. But with two outs, Lofton drew a walk, driving in 1 run. The Orioles had the win.

"What an ending!" said a jubilant Lofton.
