Walk-Off Victory for Expos Takes Record to 49-40
|
The Montreal Expos beat the New York Mets, 9-8, at Olympic Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of left fielder Gregg Jefferies, who captured player of the game honors. He was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 times. Montreal reliever Bobby Munoz was the winner. His record is now 1-0. Wayne Edwards took the loss. Montreal currently is in second place in the United League East Division at 49-40.
The Expos beat the Mets in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Raul Mondesi produced in the bottom of the ninth. Batting against New York pitcher Wayne Edwards, Mondesi gave his team a 9-8 lead when he hit a walk-off 2-run single.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said New York manager Michael Kritikos. "The effort was great."
