The Montreal Expos got a stellar performance from pitcher Jeff Fassero, who handcuffed the San Francisco offense en route to a 3-2 win at Candlestick Park. Ken Howell, credited with the win, is now 1-0. He allowed 1 run on no hits in 2 innings. Losses have been rare for the Giants, who are now 7-2.
The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Travis Fryman came to bat in the top of the tenth. Facing San Francisco pitcher Randy Myers, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Montreal on top, 3-2.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Montreal manager David Polakoff said.
