Toronto starter Hipolito Pichardo had a strong outing against the Detroit Tigers at SkyDome. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 5-4 win. The winner was Toronto reliever Steve Shirley, now 3-3. The loser was Rigo Beltran. The 4th-place Blue Jays have won 4 straight games.

The Toronto win was a team effort. It included major contributions from, among others, Mark McGwire. In the bottom of the ninth, the Toronto designated hitter came to bat and hit a walk-off run-scoring single. It staked his team to a 5-4 lead.

"This place was rockin'," said Pichardo.
