Pirates Clip White Sox in Tight Contest
The Pirates had to overcome a fine effort from Chicago pitcher Bruce Ruffin to grab a narrow 5-3 win at Three Rivers Stadium. Ruffin went 7 innings and allowed 1 earned run. Pittsburgh reliever Bryan Clark picked up the win to move to 5-5. Xavier Hernandez suffered the loss. Bryan Harvey got the save, his 25th in 28 chances.

The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Mark Whiten came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Chicago pitcher Xavier Hernandez, he hit a 0-1 fastball for a run-scoring double. It was a game-changer, putting Pittsburgh on top, 4-3.

Whiten called the win "a collective effort."

With the victory, the Pirates record now stands at 51-45.
