Dodgers Lose, 7-4, at Shea Stadium
The New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-4, at Shea Stadium today. Leading the charge for New York was shortstop Gary Sheffield. He went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. Randy Johnson, the winner, improved to 2-0. He held the Dodgers to 3 earned runs on 4 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 8 and walking 3. Darren Holmes earned his 6th save in 6 chances.

With New York leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Sheffield hit a fastball from Aaron Sele for a solo home run. It was his 23rd home run of the season and put the Mets ahead, 2-0.

"We take it day by day here," said Sheffield, "and today was a good one for us."
