Late Rally by Padres Secures Win
|
Baltimore first baseman Kent Hrbek was sensational. He was 3-3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. San Diego beat the Orioles, 4-3. Hrbek was named the player of the game despite the loss. The winner was Chuck Finley in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Steve Avery took the loss. Ramon Pena earned his 9th save in 11 chances.
San Diego used the timely hitting of Mike Simms to seize the win. The left fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Padres on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Everyone's kind of edgy right now," said losing manager Daniel Ward, "but nothing a couple of wins wouldn't cure."
The misery continues for the Orioles, which has now dropped 10 in a row.
