Seattle center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Griffey Jr. hit 2 home runs, even as Montreal beat the Pilots, 7-6. Griffey Jr. was named the player of the game despite the loss. Montreal reliever Dave Leiper was the winner. His record is now 3-1. The losing pitcher was Derek Lilliquist. Bobby Munoz earned the save for Montreal, his 1st of the year.

Montreal used the clutch hitting of Matt Williams to capture the win. The third baseman drilled a solo home run in the top of the 13th inning to put the Expos ahead, 7-6. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a big one.

"Games like this one keep the antacid makers in business," quipped Seattle manager .

The first-place Expos have a one-game lead in their division.
