Dodgers Prevail, 5-3, Over New York
|
Los Angeles right-hander Ramiro Mendoza pitched his team to victory over the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. The final score was 5-3. Mendoza got the win, improving to 8-6. He allowed 3 hits and walked 1 over 6.1 innings. Mendoza allowed no earned runs. Ricardo Rincon notched his 18th save in 23 chances.
Los Angeles used the timely hitting of Torii Hunter to capture the win. The center fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Dodgers ahead, 3-0. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was an important one.
"That's the key at this level, throwing strike one," said Mendoza. "Successful pitchers do it."
Los Angeles leads the United League West Division by 2½ games.
