Cardinals Stun Royals, 5-1
|
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals, 5-1, in Federal League action at Royals Stadium, with St. Louis pitcher Bill C. Swift named player of the game. The winning pitcher was Swift, now 1-0. He tossed 8.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 3. The win moves St. Louis to a record of 1-1.
It could have been a different outcome for St. Louis, had it not been for Ivan Calderon, the former first round draft pick . Calderon contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning to put St. Louis up, 2-1.
"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said St. Louis skipper Adam Rabel.
