White Sox Come Back Late to Top Cardinals
|
Chicago starter Greg Mathews pitched effectively against the St. Louis Cardinals at Comiskey Park. The left-hander led his team to a 6-4 win. The save went to Jeff Brantley, his 1st this season. Chicago, now 2-0, has gotten their season off to a good start.
The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Robby Thompson came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing St. Louis pitcher Mariano Rivera, he hit a 1-2 sinker for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 6-4.
"You've got to ride the highs and the lows in baseball in order to succeed," Mathews told the Chicago Daily News. "Right now I'm feeling good, but that don't mean squat for tomorrow."
