The San Diego Padres beat the Washington Senators, 7-6, at RFK Stadium. The Padres got a fine performance from center fielder Jim Edmonds, who captured player of the game honors. He was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 3 times. The winner was Robb Nen in relief. His record improves to 3-1. Dan Plesac took the loss. The third-place Padres have won 5 in a row.

Jeff Conine contributed a productive at-bat in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, he hit a 2-run single. It was one at-bat that helped San Diego get the win.

"It was a test of wills," said Matt Dodds, the San Diego skipper. "I'm glad we came out of it with a win."
