Mets Clip Diamondbacks in Tight Contest
|
The Mets faced a stiff challenge from Arizona pitcher Alex Fernandez, but persevered to claim a win at Shea Stadium. The final score was 5-4. Fernandez went 7 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. New York reliever Todd Jones picked up the win, upping his record to 3-1. Kelvim Escobar was saddled with the loss. With the victory, the Mets record now stands at 57-45.
Had Phil Nevin not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Nevin hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Mets.
"I was a little disappointed," said Arizona manager Alen Maglajac. "We could've and should've scored more runs."
