Riding the 2-hit performance of the 26-year old shortstop Gary Sheffield, the New York Mets stopped the San Diego Padres, 15-1. New York is now 64-38, San Diego 50-53.

Sheffield had a key at-bat for New York early in the game. With runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit a 3-run home run. It was his 29th home run of the season and gave New York an early 3-0 lead.

"I thought we played a nice game," Sheffield told the New York Today. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
