Cincinnati Reds starter Jim Abbott was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Texas Rangers, 4-3. Abbott, now 2-1, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing 2 earned runs. Arthur Rhodes earned his 22nd save in 23 chances.
Eric Davis, who finished 4th in the FL in home runs with 45 in 1985, helped out the Cincinnati cause in the top of the third inning with a 2-run single. For the game, the center fielder was 2-5 with 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs.
Texas manager Sean Norman said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
Cincinnati occupies second place in the Federal League East Division at 60-43.
