New York starter Scott Garrelts put a stranglehold on the Colorado offense. The right-hander had complete command of his fastball in leading the Mets to a 3-1 win. Dan Plesac converted his 21st save in 27 tries. The Mets bumped their record to 59-45 with this latest triumph.

Phil Nevin had a big run-scoring single for the Mets in the bottom of the sixth inning. With New York leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he got a curveball from Clint Zavaras and stroked the single to left. It was his 83rd hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mets ahead, 2-0.

Nevin called the triumph "a good team win."
