White Sox Score Late, Upend Reds, 5-4
|
The White Sox had to overcome a fine effort from Cincinnati pitcher Mike Mussina to grab a narrow 5-4 win at Riverfront Stadium. Mussina went 8 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Shane Reynolds, credited with the win, is now 9-9. He allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in 8 innings. Chicago is last in the Federal League Central Division with a record of 39-68.
Chicago used the timely hitting of Dave Hajek to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the White Sox on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said White Sox manager Tyler Vuxta. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."
