Orlando beat Kansas City at Royals Stadium, eking out a 7-6 win. The win was due in large part to designated hitter Tim Salmon, who earned player of the game honors. John Smoltz earned the win to go to 11-7. He allowed 5 earned runs on 9 hits, with no walks and 7 strikeouts. Wes Gardner, credited with the save, is now 7 for 11 in save opportunities.

Salmon came through with some timely hitting for Orlando. With the score 4-3 in the top of the fifth and no one down, Salmon hit a 1-1 forkball for a 3-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season made it 6-4, Orlando.

"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Salmon said after the game.

The Devil Rays saw their record improve to 57-49.
