Red Sox Drop Cardinals with Late Score
|
Despite a fine performance by shortstop John Valentin, the St. Louis Cardinals suffered a 7-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Valentin was 3 for 5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 4. With the victory, the Red Sox record now stands at 41-66.
The Red Sox grabbed the lead in the top of the ninth. With two out, David Ortiz, the 6th overall pick in the 1996 draft, hit a grand slam home run off Mariano Rivera, putting Boston in front, 7-5. For Ortiz, it was his 12th home run of the season.
"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Ortiz told reporters after the game.
