Athletics Come Up Short at Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Dodgers eked out a 5-4 win versus the Oakland Athletics at Dodger Stadium. Nobody did more than pitcher Ramiro Mendoza, who captured player of the game honors. John Franco was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 5 of 6 save opportunities. Los Angeles leads the United League West Division by 2½ games.

Los Angeles took a 3-2 lead on Brian L Hunter's 102nd hit of the season. The run-scoring single, which Hunter hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Oakland pitcher Jeff C D'Amico shaking his head.

"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Oakland manager Jim B.
