Devil Rays Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Marlins
|
The Orlando Devil Rays took Florida pitcher Kevin Appier's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Orlando Citrus Bowl. The final score had Orlando getting past the Marlins, 3-2. Appier went 6.1 innings and allowed 1 earned run, striking out 7. Orlando reliever Scott Sullivan picked up the win to move to 1-0. Billy Wagner suffered the loss. Frank DiPino was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 10 of 13 save opportunities.
Jose Valentin drew 2 walks in 4 trips to the plate for Orlando. The 27-year old shortstop had a key at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring walk off Billy Wagner. It was his 39th walk of the season.
In postgame comments to the Orlando Today, Valentin said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
Orlando is now riding a 3-game win streak.
