Kansas City right fielder Richard Hidalgo had a good game in a losing cause. His team fell, 7-6, to St. Louis at Royals Stadium. Hidalgo went 3-4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. St. Louis reliever Rusty Meacham was the winner. His record is now 4-3. The losing pitcher was Kevin Brown. Mariano Rivera converted his 5th save in 13 tries.

Stan Javier, who is a four-time All-Star, aided the St. Louis cause with a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh. For the game, the center fielder went 1 for 4.

Javier said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."

The Cardinals' win now puts them at 55-56.
