Orioles Edge Past Tigers, 3-2
|
The Baltimore Orioles racked up a win at Memorial Stadium, bumping off the Detroit Tigers, 3-2. Rod Nichols, who started for Baltimore, pitched effectively for his team. The save was Roger McDowell's, his 18th. With the win, the Orioles improved to 40-71.
The Orioles got a lift from third baseman Leo Gomez, who in the bottom of the eighth stroked a 1-1 curveball into center for a run-scoring double. It was his 17th double of the season and put the Orioles ahead, 3-2.
"We were in it," said Detroit manager Julio Izquierdo. "We just didn't score enough runs."
