Close Win Moves Knights to 57-56
|
Charlotte beat Kansas City at Royals Stadium, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Tony Saunders, who earned player of the game honors. Saunders, now 4-5, was the winner. In 6 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 7, walking 3, and allowing 3 earned runs. Tim Burke earned his 10th save in 12 chances.
One of the biggest contributors for Charlotte was shortstop Nomar Garciaparra. In the top of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Garciaparra got a first pitch slider and hit a 2-run triple. That put the Knights on top, 3-0.
"I like the grit of this ballclub," Garciaparra said.
The third-place Knights improved to 57-56.
