Cardinals Come Back Late to Clip Cubs
The Chicago Cubs got a superb performance from pitcher Mike Hampton, but the St. Louis Cardinals still won the game, 3-2. Hampton was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 8 innings of 2-hit ball. St. Louis reliever Mariano Rivera was the winner. His record is now 7-3. The losing pitcher was Doug Jones. Steve Chitren converted his 24th save in 26 tries.

Matt Williams had a nice at-bat for the Cardinals with no one out in the top of the ninth. With the bases empty, the third baseman hit a single, which would prove important in the St. Louis win.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said St. Louis skipper Adam Rabel.

The Cardinals have an impressive 70-43 record.
