The San Diego Padres got a magnificent performance from pitcher Darryl Kile, who muffled the Arizona offense en route to a tight 3-1 Padres win at Bank One Ballpark. Dave Veres got the save, his 7th in 9 chances. The Padres, at 54-59, sit in third place in the United League West Division.

San Diego needed the clutch hitting of Jim Edmonds to notch the win. The center fielder hammered a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Padres on top, 2-1. For the game, Edmonds had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Edmonds.
