Cardinals Walk Off with 4-3 Win
|
The St. Louis Cardinals did just enough to secure a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers at Busch Stadium. Nobody did more than pitcher Jay Tibbs, who captured player of the game honors. Steve Chitren, credited with the win, is now 4-4. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1 innings. The losses continue to mount for Texas, which has now dropped 7 in a row.
Coming to the plate with two out in the bottom of the tenth inning, St. Louis first baseman Ivan Calderon had a chance to be the hero. Facing Texas pitcher Rob Murphy with a runner on 1st, Calderon, who finished 4th in the FL in slugging percentage with .568 in 1985, hit a walk-off run-scoring double.
"Good pitching, clutch hitting," said St. Louis skipper Adam Rabel. "I can't complain."
