Cubs Subdue Pittsburgh, 3-2
|
The Chicago Cubs picked up a win at Three Rivers Stadium, knocking off the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2. Starting pitcher Willie Banks, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason why. Banks got the win, improving to 12-8. He allowed 7 hits and walked 5 over 7 innings. Banks allowed 1 earned run. Chicago, at 65-51, occupies second place in the Federal League Central Division.
Chicago used a timely hit from Mark Grace to get the win. The first baseman delivered a run-scoring triple in the top of the third inning to put the Cubs on top, 1-0. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"I just try to put up zeroes," said Banks, "and let the rest take care of itself."
