Dodgers Slip Past Baltimore, 4-3

The Dodgers had to overcome a fine performance from Baltimore pitcher David Wells to grab a 4-3 win at Memorial Stadium. Wells allowed no earned runs over 6 innings. Los Angeles reliever Bill Wilkinson picked up the win, upping his record to 2-1. Julian Tavarez took the loss. The first-place Dodgers have a one-game lead in their division.
Had Rafael Palmeiro not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Palmeiro hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Dodgers.
Palmeiro told a Los Angeles Daily News reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.
