Spiders Turn Back Minnesota, 6-4
|
With first baseman Howard Johnson leading the charge, the Cleveland Spiders defeated the Minnesota Twins, 6-4, at League Park. Johnson, who is a eight-time All-Star, went 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Steve Karsay got credit for the save for Cleveland. It was his 26th of the year. The 4th-place Spiders lifted their record to 57-60.
With Cleveland leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Johnson hit a fastball from Jerry Spradlin for a grand slam home run. It was his 23rd home run of the season and put the Spiders ahead, 6-1.
"We put it together today and came out with the win," Johnson said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."
