Victory Over Spiders Takes St. Louis to 71-46
|
Joe Johnson pitched a gem to lead St. Louis to a 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Spiders. Johnson, the winner, moves to 10-7. He threw 8 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 2 and giving up 1 walk. The 'W' lifts St. Louis's record to 71-46.
The Cardinals got a lift from first baseman Ivan Calderon, who in the top of the first stroked a first pitch fastball into left for a solo home run. It was his 22nd home run of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 2-0.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said St. Louis manager Adam Rabel. "It's usually not just one thing."
