Reds Slip Past Chicago, 2-1
|
Cincinnati played host to Chicago at the friendly confines of Riverfront Stadium.
Jim Abbott never let the Cubs get in a groove. The left-hander used his bread and butter, his fastball, to pitch the Reds to a 2-1 win. Cincinnati reliever Doug Henry picked up the win, upping his record to 8-9. Mike Schooler shouldered the loss.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Scott Spiezio stroked a go-ahead run-scoring single. It was his 94th hit of the season and put Cincinnati in front, 2-1.
"I believe in our guys," said Cincinnati skipper Eric Deutsch. "I like the energy they're playing with."
The Cubs, now 53-62, have lost 4 straight.
