Cubs Edge Devil Rays, 5-4
The Orlando Devil Rays got a superb performance from third baseman Jose Valentin. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Chicago. The Cubs won the game, 5-4. In spite of the loss, Valentin was named the player of the game. He went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Chicago reliever Frank DiPino picked up the win, upping his record to 3-3. Wilson Alvarez shouldered the loss. The Devil Rays, at 65-55, have lost 4 in a row.

Tied up with the Devil Rays in the bottom of the tenth inning, the Cubs got a boost from left fielder Luis Gonzalez. With the bases empty, Gonzalez saw a 2-2 slider from Wilson Alvarez and hit a solo home run to break the stalemate and put Chicago on top, 5-4.

"Winning breeds more winning, I guess," said Gonzalez.
