Extra innings were needed to determine a winner at Fenway Park.

Orlando right-hander John Smoltz made an effective start against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, leading his team to a 5-2 win. The winner was Alan Embree in relief. His record improves to 3-1. Joe Borowski took the loss.

Orlando used the clutch hitting of Jeff Bagwell to capture the win. The first baseman drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to give the Devil Rays the lead, 3-2. For the game, Bagwell had 1 single and 1 double in 5 at-bats.

"We did a lot of things right," said Bagwell.

The Devil Rays raised their record to 63-58.
