1997 is shaping up to be a forgettable year for the Detroit Tigers.
New York Mets starter Frank Castillo pitched a strong game against the Detroit Tigers at Shea Stadium, leading the Mets to a 4-3 win. New York reliever Todd Jones was the winner. His record is now 5-1. Rigo Beltran took the loss.
One of the New York stars provided one of his team's biggest hits. It happened in the bottom of the eighth with no one out. Sammy Sosa, who is on pace for 135 RBI this season, hit a 2-run home run on a 0-2 slider to put the Mets up, 4-3. For the game, the center fielder went 1-3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Detroit manager Julio Izquierdo. "The effort was great."
This win makes it 7 in a row for New York.
