With center fielder J.R. Phillips leading the charge, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 8-3, at Memorial Stadium. Phillips was 1 for 2 with a home run and 2 walks, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Detroit reliever Elmer Dessens picked up the win, upping his record to 4-2. Rod Nichols was saddled with the loss. Detroit has now won 4 in a row.

With Detroit leading 3-0 in the top of the sixth, Phillips hit a fastball from Russ Springer for a 3-run home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Tigers ahead, 6-0.
