The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Montreal Expos, 4-2, in United League action at Olympic Stadium, with Baltimore pitcher Dwight Gooden named player of the game. Julian Tavarez converted his 9th save in 16 tries. Baltimore is now 57-66, while Montreal is 79-45.

It could have been a different outcome for Baltimore, had it not been for Kelly Gruber, the 35-year old third baseman . Gruber contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth inning to put Baltimore up, 2-0.

Gruber called the win "a collective effort."
