Tigers Topple Marlins with Late Rally
|
Runs were at a premium in the Detroit-Florida matchup.
Florida got a terrific performance from pitcher Chris Hammond, but it wasn't enough to beat the Detroit Tigers. Detroit won the Tiger Stadium contest, 1-0. Hammond was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings of 3-hit ball. German Jimenez got credit for the win, improving to 1-3. He allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings.
Torey Lovullo drove in one run for Detroit. The 29-year old second baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Chris Hammond. It was his 15th RBI of the season.
"It's no secret that good defense follows around people who throw strikes," said Detroit manager Julio Izquierdo.
Detroit has a 4-game win streak, while Florida has lost 4 in a row.
