Fans brought energy and enthusiasm to the Montreal Expos home opener. Pedro Martinez started for the home team against John Smiley for the Toronto Blue Jays. The Expos were unable to reward the home crowd with a win. The final score was 2-1, Toronto. Pedro Martinez was named player of the game. German Jimenez recorded his 1st save for Toronto.

Tony Fernandez, who finished 5th in the UL in triples with 11 in 1985, aided the Toronto cause with a run-scoring triple in the top of the sixth. For the game, the shortstop went 1 for 3 with a triple.

"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Fernandez told reporters after the game.
