The Boston Red Sox did just enough to sneak past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2, at Fenway Park. Boston pitcher Tom Gordon earned player of the game honors. Gordon got the win, improving to 11-10. He allowed 3 hits and walked 3 over 6 innings. Gordon allowed 2 earned runs. Pedro F. Borbon notched his 1st save in 1 chances.
Boston designated hitter Henry L. Rodriguez made his contribution to the Red Sox cause with a 2-run double in the bottom of the first inning. For the day, Rodriguez was 1-4 with a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
