Chicago left-hander Mike Hampton helped his team edge Boston by the score of 2-1. Hampton kept the opposing lineup in check. Chicago now has a 3-game win streak.

The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Jeff Cirillo came to bat in the bottom of the 13th. Facing Boston pitcher Paul Assenmacher, he hit a 0-2 curveball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 2-1.

"This game will make a man of you," said Anthony Perez, the Chicago skipper, "if it doesn't kill you first."
