The New York Mets managed to get by the San Diego Padres, 2-1, at Shea Stadium. New York pitcher Tom Glavine took player of the game honors. Darren Holmes notched his 15th save in 16 chances. New York has now won 4 games in a row.

Tony Tarasco took Darryl Kile deep with no one out in the bottom of the fifth. On a 0-2 fastball, Tarasco drilled a solo home run to left. It was his 16th home run of the season and put New York on top, 2-1.
